Before I get banned again by Whitefolks I just wanted to say,Sick
mixtape. Lyrically at a mainstream level these guys are way on top of
everyone. The only thing for me as it shows in this mixtape is they need
good beats to make there songs sound ten times better than they already
are. They always lack that, and have bad ears for beats. Anyone thats
been an actual fan of SH would agree. The SH EP proved that. This
mixtape is sick though! I just wish every track had Crooked I going in
the first verse instead of Joe Emo Budden cus I’m having to fast forward
his verse everytime, of course his the weakest link in the group and I
still remain to what I believe.

Hearing a few people on other sites say ‘Royce has fallen off’. Haven’t really paid close to his lyrics but does anyone else think there is any truth to this? I for one never thought he was all that… but others did. Could it be possible that people are beginning to see the truth now that they are hearing him rap next to three dudes who really are dope?

  Well, I’ll just name all the dudes I think are lyrically the best in the game right now, in no particular order: Budden, Crooked, Elzhi, Jay-Z, Common, Mos Def (his albums are often terrible but he can spit) Kendrick, Eminem, J. Cole, Beanie Sigel, Drake, Black Thought, Lupe. And although I find Joell to be kinda boring and he’s not one of my favorites, I do consider him to be a better lyricist than Royce,

      I agree. Eminem is not the GOAT. I’m not a big Eminem fan actually. Never have been. He has great wordplay and dope delivery at times, but he made a career based off of white boy shock value stuff and it never impressed me. He does have several songs I like and consider classics (Renegade, Til I Collapse, Sing For The Moment) but, overall, never really got down with him like the rest of the world.

      And just so we’re clear, there is nothing special ‘concept wise’ about world is an addiction, bye baby or daughters and those songs are not even close to ahead of their time. Just because Nas isn’t talking about guns or hoes doesn’t make his song highly conceptual or even deep. Backpack, underground rappers spit that sort of rap daily. Now when Nas rapped from the viewpoint of a gun, and when he rapped drom the viewpoint of a fetus, and when he made Rewind, those were some songs one could argue were ahead of their time conceptually.

      Drake is lyrical. I can name many, many lines that he’s said that are dope and far better than the average rapper. He is also far better than Sean. Sean, from what I’ve heard anyway, has very little substance to him. He’s like a party rapper for High School kids or something. Sean dropped a single called A$$. Drake has never dropped any garbage like that. And they do not have the same style. The only thing similar about them is the use of the ‘super duper flow’ punchlines… which are pretty much over and done with. I consider Sean to be a corny clown. Drake on the other hand has a great flow, the ability to sing, great songwriting ability, versality, and lyrics that are poignant, timely and clever.

      Drake is not a sellout. The word sellout is used incorrectly in hip-hop. In hip-hop, people call those who make radio friendly music sell-outs. That’s not true and doesn’t make sense. Now, as a rapper, if you believe that making serious, complex or socially politically conscious music is what an artist should rap about, but you go and make dumb downed radio hits for money… THAT’S a sellout. But if making radio friendly hits is what you WANT to make, and you truly believe in them… then you’re not a sellout. In fact, if you truly believe in making radio hits and you go and make a ‘serious’ song just to impress so-called ‘real hip hop heads’… THAT makes you a sellout too. Selling out should not be defined making radio hits; it should be defined as not being true to yourself. That is all. Drake makes serious serious music and radio friendly music in just about equal proportions, and even his radio music is more sophisticated and artistically sound then most. I’d argue he’s one of the most balanced MC’s in the game. And if anyone believes that making tracks with Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj is selling out… then that makes Nas is a sellout too.
      
      (And if you wonder why I get pissed off so often on this site, it’s because I make comments like the one I just said above, comments that are well thought out and actually make sense– not just what I WANT to be true– and I get trashed for it.)

You’ve become convinced that I come on this site and defend Drake against all songs. And yet that’s not true. I don’t think Drake is the second coming. I don’t think he’s the GOAT.       You know what gitmunny, I understand where you’re coming from as well. If more people took the time to articulate their point the way that you have… we might actually get somewhere with these discussions. In response to you, I’ll say something that I’ve said before: The key to these discussions is clarity. We need to communicate to each other before hand what our definitions of certain terms are. We all use words like ‘lyrical’ all the time and expect everyone to understand what we mean… but the truth is that we all define the word a little bit differently.
      
      Now, I believe there are several components that make up a rapper: Lyricism, Flow, Content and Voice. And all of them need to come together just right to make for a truly elite rapper. As far as lyrics go, I consider that to be ‘hot lines’. Those ‘how did he come up with that?’ lines (Crooked I is the master of them). So according to my definition, Nas is not one of the best lyricists in the game (anymore)… but I do agree that he is one of the best and most versatile when it comes to what I call Content (which is what I think you consider to be Lyrical).
      
      As far as Nas not using hot lines because he’s proved himself and doesn’t feel he needs to anymore, I think that may very well be true. I can certainly believe it. But, I do think that ‘hot lines’, metaphors, so on and so forth, are an essential part of hip-hop, and I think he’s depriving us by not giving us that element.       Listen to Jay-Z’s verse and Nas’s verse. Both of them had content…but whereas Nas was just getting his point across with standard lines, Jay was delivering his in a HOT way. If you have to choose between receiving a message in a standard way or a special way… why would you choose standard? The definition of art is to be able to combine truth (content) with beauty (hotness).
      
      At the end of the day though,, if Nas is at a place where he feels that hot lines aren’t important… that’s fine. He has earned that right.
