Why can’t people admit to themselves that nas has been putting out lackluster projects for years now? It’s mind boggling. Every time he drops something, everyone on here says shit like ‘GOAT’ and ‘This is what hip-hop needs.’ But people no longer base their opinions off of his SONGS, they base them off of his NAME. As soon as they see it’s a Nas track they’ve already pre-conditioned themselves to love it. I call BS. Be real: How many Nas tracks that have come out on in recent years do you really listen to? Nearly every song by Nas that’s come out on defsounds in the past few years I’ve forgotten all about. If anybody else made THIS mediocre ass song we’re listening to now it would get thrown into the irrelevant vault ASAP. I’m just saying… stop holding Nas down for his Illmatic days. Judge his music OBJECTIVELY and admit it ain’t what it used to be. This song: 5/10 at BEST!
So his verse on “Ghetto Dreams” was wack? “Nasty” was wack? His verse on “Dog Shit” was below average? C’mon son. This isn’t a standout track but it isn’t garbage either.
@mjbll I’m gonna keep in three hunet wit cha. Are you smoking crack? I read your comment before listening to the track, so I felt a way by having an agreement with your comment. After I listened to the track I was in amazement by your lousy statement as if this track was shitty. This track was superb, the beat was genius and the hook was smooth. His lyrics were above par, so not sure wtf you get 5/10 at. I give this an 8.5/10 at the least. Track is one hell of a Nas track fo real. I also agree with Baystate, Ghetto Dreamz, Nasty, Dogshit, and even Snitch Alibi were some cool ass Nas tracks released recently. You must not know wtf Nas suppose to sound like, but this is some everyday Nas here lol Referencing the mans “Illmatic” days is f-cking retarded since he is like 40 years old now compared to 20 something. There will be no more 90′s rap, but there will be some tracks that are damn near close to it. Ok, I am done typed ALOT!
FYI, Nas is one of the GOATs. I have a list of GOATs myself, so I don’t just put one rapper on top a pedal stool by himself.

I hear you COB. And I do agree lyricism does come in different forms. I think people often label both conscious lyrics and just straight up fire lines as lyrical- and i guess in their own ways they both are. but there is a huge difference. in any case, thanks for being level headed and respectful. i’m always down for a good debate. i just hate when people refuse to listen and bash just because someone has a diff. opinion.
Haha, Nas is one of them artists that most people can have a respectable debate amongst each other without the bickering hahaha.
mjbII
Oh and COB- I’m ESPECIALLY SURPRISED at you. I’ve seen the way you big up Crooked I and you know what? You’re 100% right. Crooked is CERTAINLY TOP 5 RIGHT NOW LYRICALLY. And an argument can be made for Number 1. But for you to know that and still consider Nas a lyrical monster anywhere on that level right now… I gotta call that blindness. It’s not even close.
I will agree that Nas made some mediocre music recently. An album that comes to mind would be “Untitled.” There were a few decent tracks, but it was far from being a “Classic album.” I guess I may have took your comment wrong, I thought you were saying this track is garbage. I personally like the track and downloaded to put on my ipod in my “Nas collection.” I understand the point your trying to get across. Trust me the rappers you listed is far from mainstream hip-hop and I know what you mean about lyrical etc. You have to remember there is different types of lyrics. Nas sorta fits a category of his own in my opinion. He has a unique style to a degree making sure that his true fans stay fans. Also preventing the need for a radio track to get sales. I guess your right his lyrics don’t ignite a fire like they use to, but to me most of his music is still dope!

I see what your saying but I can also see that mainstream media has had an effect on you. Nas doesn’t care if his songs are radio friendly OR Rap friendly. It seems he makes songs based off of what he feels and what he likes. Look at the Distant Relatives album, nothing really on there was radio friendly at all, but you can listen to it and take something from it. If you can’t then my friend I don’t know what to tell you, other than Nas is on a whole other format of music that you aren’t used to, or will never get used to. I’m not trying to bash you or anything, but I’m just pointing out my opinion about most hiphop listeners. I honestly think hiphop heads compare the new/re-invented artist to their older/classic taste rather than sitting back and watch their favorite MC grow and evolve. Just my thought man, but I do see where your coming from.

if i could prop u twice i would
mjbII
Well I propped Edward too believe it or not. Just for being sensible and attempting to debate rather than bash me. But as I said in another post… I’m not all that into mainstream rap. And I certainly don’t have a problem with evolution. I think cats like Kanye, Common, Jay and others evolved wonderfully. But Nas is a watered down version of his old self to me. And lyrically I think he’s average these days. Do I think he HAS to be average? That he’s done? No. I just think he’s off right now and has been for some time.
SchizNicca
U think nas is watered down and average lyrically these days but u think JAY evlolved wonderfully? Nuff said….
NaS has been quietly dropping gems this year. This man needs to put out an album
Tw1sT
always nice to hear a leak from nasty nas
BlazeA50
what r yall talking about? Nas makes real hip-hop thats y the mainstream overlooks him. and all his albums r on point! Distant Realatives was one of the best albums last year and it pisses me off how ppl were like it was ok. Shit was a classic, ill still be bumping that 5 years from now
nas still has potential to drop classic… since it seems like he dont care about radio and shit he should drop a 90′s type album with songs like dog shit and ghetto dreams.. these songs took me back
mjbII
Amazing I got trashed for speaking the truth. But it is what it is. I should’ve known. And no I’m not blinded by ‘mainstream’ rap. I actually listen to very little mainstream rap. All that gets rotation on my Ipod these days is J. Cole, Joe Budden, Common & Elzhi. And they’ve been dropping heat. Also, I didn’t say this song was trash. I said it was average. And I damn sure stand by that. I stand by my orginal point: If anyone else in the game drops this song- you guys forget about it in 2 seconds. Oh and I’ll also stand by this: All of you raving about this song won’t be listening to it in 2 days. Watch.
- keep it one hunet

I agree! Nas doesn’t bring that spark to music like he used to. He just doesn’t seem too interesting to me how he did back in the day. His beat selection doesn’t help… I tried distant relatives, and that got 3 days of rotation. People are definitely judging his music by name first instead of content
mjbII
I would love it if some of Nas’s recent raps had been released with lyrics only; with no vocals, no beats and no mention of who wrote them. And I GUARANTEE you guys would say “AVERAGE AT BEST.”
dedication3
There’s a lot of PARAGRAPHS being written around here… not quite sure if I want to read them or not.
seanp
@my man mjbll, Evry joint i heard from nas weather its a feature or single has been at least good to hot lyrically, if u ask me hes back! hes at worst top 10 in the game on his weakest day, if thats the case boss, whos better right now?
charm-city
Song aight
But Nas hasn’t been the same since his moms passed, since the release of God Son. By far his last hottest album
Sonic123
you didnt like the “untilted” album ? or even street deciple ?
he lost his mojo a bit but trust this year or even lately nas is turning back to his old form. For example his new single “Nasty” that shit sounded like some illmatic/it was written shit.
I have faith in my dude Nas is GOAT
seanp
@charm-city, u got to be crazy if u think Hip-Hop is Dead wasnt hot! Now Untitled was ok i give u that but after hearin “Nasty” u cant tell me that nigga doest got the bite back to his lyrics! past couple years he been on his political sht, but now he commin back with that real sht!
http://defsounds.com im-sorry-to-say-ur-a-hoe
mjbII^^ i feel u homie, not about the lyrics though, if you were to put out the lyrics on a piece of paper any given day it would be read amazing i think,…but besides that i don’t listen to Nas never, i mean never maybe his older stuff when i come by it,…but yea basically he just lost his Mojo, he just doesn’t have the ferocity like he use to,…one mic etc…
I really like the track, the beat, hook, and lyrics. Not sure why many of you are down playing this shit. I felt the shit was dope… But hey everyone is entitled to their opinions lol. I agree to an extent with just about everyone on this thread that commented. Too bad we still do NOT have blogging available to us hahaha!
This track is okay, but nothing special.. but like cob marley say, its much better then jays and kanyes otis.. that track sucks, i said it
J3STER
this track is dope, it’s real, just appreciate it. Ya’ll go mad hard when a vet throws up a track… just bump it yo, NaS never lets you down idgaf who you are lol.
J3STER
Cole Does a great job too.
SchizNicca
yall niggas gotta be high or sumthin..honestly i never took time out 2 listen 2 anything from distant relatives just bcuz of my lack of interest in hearin him in a collaborative project but if u think dis nigga aint on his shit no more after an album like untitled which i consider 2 be 1 of da best hip hop albums in da past few years but u can big up jay after droppin a piece of shit like blueprint 3 i kno wut time it is..dat shit is da epitome of bein a shell of yo former self..nas kept it 100 all da way back 2 illmatic and nasty is dope..am i sayin he as good as he was in his prime? Fuck no..but da nigga is still very much 1 of da best lyricists..if u think ye a better lyricist then nas u gotta be leanin
http://defsounds.com Magik
This is cool but Joe Budden Smashed this beat a few years back the track was called Outcast. This is far from wack but Budden’s sh#t was far better
