The question of when Talib Kweli would release his new album Prisoner Of Conscious has been up in the air for quite some time, but now we finally get the answer as the Brooklyn emcee has revealed the release date for his forthcoming solo album. Talib also explained the meaning behind the Prisoner Of Conscious album title.

During a recent interview with RollingStone, Talib Kweli made the announcement of his forthcoming album’s release date as April 23rd.

As Talib chopped it up with the publication, he addressed the meaning behind the Prison Of Conscious title.

Kweli explains that the title is used as way to attempt to get rid of, or at least change, the “socially conscious rapper” label placed on him since early in his career:

At the center of being socially conscious is your community – it’s where you come from, what type of person that it made you, and how you give back to that. And it’s a cycle

He added:

With me it’s like, ‘Oh, he’s a great lyricist,’ but they don’t focus on the music. I think it’s because of how I’ve been sold and how I’ve been marketed as some sort of poster boy for underground rap.

Back in December, Talib Kweli released the music video for his Ryan Leslie featured single, “Outstanding” that is produced by Boi 1da, you can watch that [here].
