When the majority of artists release their debut album, you soon hear about them beginning to record their sophomore effort, but not Kendrick Lamar. The Compton rapper has revealed that he wants to wait awhile before he begins work on his new album as he states that he doesn’t “want to force things” and still “live in the moment” while waiting on the right inspiration to get locked in the lab and get to work.
During a recent interview with Hot 97’s Miss Info backstage after his show at NYC’s Roseland Ballroom, Kendrick Lamar spoke on waiting to record the follow up to his critically acclaimed debut, good kid, m.A.A.d. city.
I haven’t locked in album mode; I write everyday though. I have ideas all the time, but me going in the studio and locking in, and making the next album, I don’t feel like – I don’t want to force things.
I still want to live in this moment. My biggest mistake right now today is not living in the moment, and understanding everything that’s going on. Like I told to one of them fans out there, you’re family. I still can’t understand that I’m on this stage right now, so I’m just trying to adapt to it and live in the moment of rockin’ two shows in New York, going to Europe and seeing the new faces before I go back in the studio and find a new experience and new inspiration to jump in
The TDE rapper reveals he’s waiting on the right inspiration to begin recording the next album:
How I’m feeling right now, it would be more of a moment of inspiration, being inspired to go back in and be confident in what I want to say next. I don’t think it would be an actual date when I say, “Okay, let me start.” I’m soon to be inspired just off that, in this moment of just talking to you.

In other Kendrick Lamar news:
J.Cole says the collaborative project with Kendrick is a still a go.
In 2011, J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar announced that they would team up to release a collaborative mixtape, soon after the announcement, the idea of a mixtape changed to an album as Cole said the music was to good to waste on an mixtape. In the two years since the initial announcement, the joint project has been talked about many times, but nothing has yet come to fruition. Now, once again J.Cole speaks on the album with Kendrick Lamar, and says that it is still happening.
During a recent interview with Jenny Boom Boom of Hartford’s Hot 93.7, J.Cole confirms that the album is still on the way.
When asked if the album with Kendrick Lamar is still dropping, J.Cole states:
Yeah, that’s still happening. We got in a few times. Last time we got in was months ago though, but we will. We’ll finish that.
Cole explains what it’s like working with The Compton emcee:
It’s incredible. It’s like working with my little cousin man, it’s dope. It’s like when you used to have your cousin come over; all you did was play basketball, video games. Y’all like the same things. It was like that, but we got in, it was dope… There’s not a lot of fronting involved with either of us. I feel like that’s the new wave.”
