50 Cent Gives Track By Track Break Down Of “Get Rich Or Die Tryin” For 10 Year Anniversary

50 Cent released his debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ on February 6, 2003. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart as the G-Unit general’s album sold 872,000 copies in its first sales week.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of GRODT, 50 Cent sat down with MTV and gave a track by track break down of the album.

50 Cent’s best LP to date but all three of his follow ups went hard in the paint too… Best hard core gangsta rapper of the new millennium. Biggie obviously takes the crown prior to that.

    Wasn’t a gangsta rapper. U seen documentaries on him? Pac is top 5 no doubt b/c of his storytelling but in truth he wasn’t what Biggie and 50 Cent were when it comes to gangsta rap. ‘All Eyez On Me’ was more about his rock N roll party lifestyle and time in prison than it was about harsh realities. When he did talk about harsh realities it was inspirational not hard core lyricism.

        Sounds like a Ja Rule song. Lol. Watch Tupac: Resurrection. Smh. Tupac was more like Nas than anybody living today. I still listen to ‘Thugz Mansion’ and no Nas wasn’t a gangsta either. Both won their beefs against the former Kings of New York with Hit ‘Em up and Ether. Both are from New York as well if u didn’t know that either.

        50 was a gangster. No doubt about it. But he made the switch. Biggie was a gangster to a degree. I do believe that the “notorious” label was fabricated. Puffy even alludes to this on “I’ll be missing you” when he says “So far from hanging on the block for dough, Notorious they got to know that”. Childhood friends even say Biggie was a sweetheart, funny, and kind hearted dude.
        
        As for 2pac, he didn’t put work in the streets. No sir. But he became more of a gangster than anyone on the rap scene in the 90s. He would step to anyone and demand respect. It didn’t matter who it was. Death Row enabled him. It changed him. He once wanted to challenge society labelling him a thug, tried to give it a new connotation, but after Death Row, he embraced it. He manifested into a thug, and although it wasn’t natural or true to his upbringing, it was real. It took and worsened everyday until the day he died.
        
        50 would never take it that far, and especially not Biggie. Maybe because they were smarter. Maybe 2pac got too caught up in believing he was untouchable. Or maybe he was just too muthafuckin gangsta for this world. Peace.

        I should add, it wasn’t just Death Row that changed him. It was getting set up…shot and robbed and left for dead…betrayed by the very people he trusted and helped build….being framed, and convicted for a crime he didn’t commit…being lied to… having everyone turn their back to him. And in all this time, when everyone had their backs turned, there was one person who didn’t. One person who identified with him, saw him for his worth, and picked him up.. treated him like a brother and took him in when no one else did… they shared common goals… and even enemies. That person I’m referring to is of course none other than Marion “Suge” Knight. Death Row became 2pac’s home and they were absolutely the most gangster entity in mainstream rap, then and now. It was so different from what 2pac started as, it was only natural that it would change him too. And it did, for the worse sadly, as it took his life.

        All of that happened because of Marion “Suge” Knight. Suge Knight was the gangsta not BIggie haha. The beef between Biggie and Pac became real but that doesn’t make Pac a gangsta. U already said u thought Ja Rule was a gangsta… Nope Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff was. Biggie wasn’t soft for not replying on wax… Jeezy didn’t reply to Rick Ross on wax. Does that make Officer Ricky more gangsta than Jeezy? Rhetorical hell no. Biggie Smalls, 50 Cent, and Young Jeezy all sold drugs for a living prior to rap… 2Pac, Ja Rule, and Rick Ross didn’t. I’d never lump 2Pac into the same circle as Ja Rule or Rick Ross but damn u really believe Ja Rule was gangsta. LOL! SMH!

        Now I know you didn’t just compare 2pac and Suge’s relationship to Ja Rule’s and Supreme’s!!!! One was a big brother/little brother bond while the other was a gangster extorting talent. I’ll let you piece it. And secondly, I know you didn’t just say that selling drugs = being gangster!!!!!
        
        BTW Biggie did reply on wax, just after Pac already died. Lol it was a low blow, but i don’t care, it was warranted. Im a biggie fan.
        
        Thirdly, this isn’t a discussion about Ja Rule’s street credibility, that’s a whole other discussion/debate. This is about 2pac being a muthafuckin thug ni99a!!!
        
        I don’t know what your definition of being a gangster is (selling drugs?) but I think someone who is able to handle their business (legally and illegally), command respect from everyone (even from enemies), and having no fear of anyone (or anything) is gangsta like a muthafucka. Those are qualities 2pac had. 2pac got too caught up in the new lifestyle he was introduced to by Suge. He wasn’t schooled to the game properly or taught lessons. Maybe that’s why he took things too far. He just didn’t know better. He was making poor decisions and got hit with ramifications he didn’t fully understand or anticipate. Maybe guys like 50, Jay, Nas, and Biggie, knew better, since they’ve been in touch with the streets more, and appreciated their opportunity and toned down on being gangster. But 2pac couldn’t have that privilege. It happened all too fast. He had too much hatred. He embraced being a gangsta. There was nothing subtle about 2pac’s erratic behaviour. No censorship, no self-control. Almost a completely new person. Hence “Exit 2pac Enter Makaveli”.
        
        But Im gonna stop there, otherwise Im gonna explore various points leading to 2pac’s path of self-destruction which will go on and on.

        “Putting in work” in the street is definitely a measure of street credibility/being a gangsta, while those other qualities I mentioned come with the territory and attitude of being a gangsta. And I can’t deny it, 2pac didn’t put in work like 50 or Biggie. But as the old saying goes, real recognize real. 2pac was co-signed by heavy gangsters, he was well respected in hoods, and he was heavily affiliated.

        listen here, Biggie and 50 make better gangster rap than 2pac? Thats fair to argue. But does that mean Biggie or 50 are more gangster than 2pac? Absolutely not. Or that 2pac is more gangster than them? Not necessarily. It depends on how you define gangster. I personally believe 2pac was the realest rapper ever. He was a very outspoken individual who was never one to bite his tongue, and was very direct and vocal about his beefs. Biggie, I believe, was a much bigger sweetheart then he was a thug, and the whole “notorious” was a marketing ploy by Puffy. As for 50, he was gangster, but got his first mil and switched up. 2pac on the other hand got deeper and deeper into the underworld. The guy died cus he was too gangsta! He had no right fighting with other gangsters, he was a superstar, and thats not how superstars are suppose to behave. RIP 2pac. So to conclude, Biggie and 50 are two great at their craft, but I’d give it to 2pac and Ja Rule as the best. Amen.
