With 2011 right around the corner, some of the biggest brands in Hip Hop have gotten stronger over the last year with key additions to the labels rosters.
We wanted to break down 3 major labels and give some reasoning why each label will or won’t dominate the coming year.
G.O.O.D Music Roster: Starting Five: Kanye West, Common, Mos Def, CyHi Da Prince & Pusha T | Sixth Man: Big Sean
Why They Will Run 2011: Kanye West, he might be the biggest artist in Hip Hop at the moment and dropping his recent masterpiece “MBDTF” will give his squad great momentum going into the new year. With one of Hip Hop’s biggest rookies Big Sean is gearing up to drop his debut in 2011. Followed by recent signings of Pusha T, Mos Def & lyrical up-and-comer CyHi Da Prince you can expect G.O.O.D Music to takeover in 2011, let’s just hope they keep the G.O.O.D Fridays coming.
Why They Won’t Dominate 2011: I can’t think of a reason why they won’t be dominate unless Big Sean’s & CyHi’s albums disappoint the masses. As long as they spit to their potential, and don’t try to cross straight over into the mainstream lifestyle I don’t see how they’ll be stopped.
Roc Nation Roster: Starting Five: Jay-Z, J. Cole, Wale, J. Electronica & No ID
Why They Will Run 2011: Jay-Z is at the helm and with “Watch The Throne” slated to drop in 2011, Jigga is showing in his old age that the bars are timeless. With the help of J. Cole and the recent signing of critically acclaimed lyrical rapper J. Electronica, Roc Nation could bring a new sound to Hip Hop forefront.
Why They Won’t Dominate 2011: Well in the past few years Jay-Z hasn’t been heralded for putting on for his other artists. J. Cole was on the roster for a good portion of 2010 and all that was produced was a mixtape. I don’t see J. Elect appealing to the general public so the odds that he will be dropping an album anytime soon might just be wishful thinking, but we will see. Its all on Hov.
Young Money Roster: Starting Five: Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tyga & Jae Millz
Why They Will Run 2011: Its safe to say they ran 2010, so they know about the formula to success. Drake going platinum. Nicki Minaj will at least go gold and that’s saying something in this day and age, especially for a female rapper. And they are lead by Lil Wayne, who before he went to jail, was one of, if not the, biggest star in rap at the moment. Even the underlings might start to get their exposure game up. Lil Twist is going to be doing an ENTIRE mixtape with Shawty Mane, most people know him as Justin Beiber (I’m not joking, they are really going to do a project together). Tyga was featured on the number 1 song this year, I would assume a project was just around the corner.
Why They Won’t Dominate 2011: Young Money is a group with 3 big names. Jae Millz, Tyga and a whole slew of those bench-warmers have not dropped an album, nor a single from an album. Some can consider Young Money to be the Miami Heat, 3 starters and all bench-players. How long can their run really last?
